Caregiving and technology

My name is Samantha Salinas, I am a doctoral student at the School of Health Professions, UT Health San Antonio. I am in my final year as a student of occupational therapy and am completing my capstone with the School of Nursing’s, Caring for the Caregiver program.

I have had the opportunity to work with an incredible team here at Caring for the Caregiver, and I am loving every minute of it! One of my favorite assignments is getting to assist Sara Masoud with planning and marketing for the SA Amigos Memory Café. These events are always so fun to attend, and I enjoy getting to engage with the caregivers and their loved ones in a lighthearted way.

Caring for the Caregiver’s mission is so important to me and aligns with my chosen profession’s values so closely. Occupational therapy takes a holistic approach to promote well-being and improving quality of life by using one’s meaningful occupations in a therapeutic way. This program strives to improve the quality of life in caregivers via a holistic approach as well. This is demonstrated by the social support groups, educational presentations, and skills training classes provided through this program.

During my time working with this organization, I have also been working on my capstone project under the mentorship of Dr. Kylie Meyer. In conjunction with Dr. Meyer and other team members, I have developed a survey designed to help us learn more about the technology needs and preferences of caregivers living in the San Antonio area. We believe that this information is so important, especially today as technology plays a large role in many of our lives. If there are ways we can use technology to improve the quality of life of our caregivers, we want to know about them. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete. If you are a caregiver and have 15 minutes of your time to give, we would really appreciate if you would consider taking this survey linked below. We thank you so much for your time.
