Seeking Volunteers – Consider joining one of our advisory councils

Seeking Caregivers to Serve on Volunteer Councils

Caring for the Caregiver Programs would not be possible without the input of caregivers like you. Since our beginning in 2017, Caring for the Caregiver services and research have been guided by caregiver voices. We continue to do this through multiple volunteer councils, such as Dementia Friendly San Antonio Advisory Board and the Caring for the Caregiver Advisory Council. In 2022, we are recruiting for multiple councils to guide new and ongoing projects. We hope you will consider joining us!

Dementia Friendly Advisory Council: San Antonio’s Dementia Friendly Initiative is led by a volunteer council of persons living with dementia, caregivers, and professionals. This council leads education and other efforts in our community to enable families living with dementia to continue to engage in our community. We are seeking members in the San Antonio region to participate in once-monthly meetings by Zoom, as well as a sub-group on the Council. Please contact Jennifer Brackett for more information (brackett@uthscsa.edu).

Dementia Stakeholder Council (PCORI): Are you a family caregiver or person living with dementia who is interested in working side-by-side with researchers to investigate care for families living with dementia? Contact us if you would like to join our Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Stakeholder Advisory Council to build your research capacity and to inform projects with your lived experience and personal perspective. Please contact Sara Masoud for more information (masoud@uthscsa.edu)

Learning Skills Together Latino Advisory Council: Learning Skills Together is one of Caring for the Caregiver’s flagship programs where we teach family members how to conduct complex care tasks. Recently, we received funding to better culturally tailor this program to better meet the needs of Latino families. For example, one of our sessions focuses on nutrition; since beginning the program, we’ve integrated more Mexican recipes and snack ideas preferred by our majority Mexican American community. This group will meet X/month for 2 years to help revise the program and to guide its evaluation. Please contact Carole White for more information (whitec2@uthscsa.edu).

Caring for the Caregiver Advisory Council: This Council meets once a month to discuss services and research at Caring for the Caregiver generally. In past meetings, we’ve prepared the annual survey for the Caring for the Caregiver program, provided input on doctoral nursing student research, and brainstormed ideas for the Caring for the Caregiver Newsletter and Essentials series. This group meets once per month by Zoom. Caregivers from anywhere in the US may participate. Please contact Kylie Meyer for more information (meyerk1@uthscsa.edu).
